Reading Room: More Hockey Edition

Welcome to another (belated) edition of the reading room. It was a slow week for BSU sports, but I found some things for your reading pleasure. I apologize for the lack of posts this past week. Hopefully this one is more exciting.

Roth hired as assistant coach in Bismarck – Bismarck Tribune; The World of Junior Hockey

Is Bismarck becoming Bemidji West? The Bismarck Bobcats (NAHL) have just hired former Beaver Garrett Roth as an assistant coach. Not surprising, considering head coach and GM Layne Sedevie is Roth’s former Beaver teammate. Roth will be returning to his old team; he spent two seasons with the Bobcats before coming to Bemidji, where he played for three.

Western Michigan releases schedule –

A short little primer on one of BSU’s two nonconference opponents. The Broncos will come to Bemidji Jan. 4 and 5, and the Beavers appear to be Western’s toughest nonconference opponent – WMU will also host St. Laurence and Canisius. Western, of course, won the CCHA tournament before losing to North Dakota in the first round of the playoffs last season. The Broncos will look very similar this coming season, returning goaltender Frank Slubowski, most of their defenders and their top line. In other words, a great nonconference test for the Beavers.

(Interestingly enough, both of the Beavers’ two nonconference series feature opponents from the Great State of Michigan.* BSU opens the season with a pair of games against Lake Superior State. LSSU’s schedule hasn’t been released, but they’re slated to come to the Sanford Center Oct. 19 and 20, the official home opener for BSU.)

*Yes, that is Tim Allen doing voiceovers for Michigan tourism commercials. Jealous?**

**No, I’m not getting paid by the Michigan tourism board. I just have an excess of civic/state pride.

Schultz elected to wrestling Hall of Fame – Pioneer

A few people with BSU connections were also inducted.

MSU Mankato headed for D-II world series – Mankato Free Press

The Mavs defeated St. Cloud State 5-4 to advance to the Division II world series in Cary, N.C. They’ll play Southern New Hampshire in the first game of the double elimination tournament, which begins Saturday. Other finalists include Indianapolis, West Chester, Chico State, Catawba, Delta State and St. Mary’s (Texas).
